The name "Angthong" has been assumed in the 3 levels
First assumption : The word "Angthong" should came from physical location of fertile basin where looks like a big bowl or "Ang" in Thai word. The land is filled with the rice full with ear of paddy, looks like gold color or "Thong" in Thai word. This become to be the province seal of rice in the golden bowl.
Sencond assumption : The name "Angthong" might came from an old village name "Bang Kam Thong" when Ayutthaya was the capital of Thailand (or Ayutthaya era).
Third assumption : From village "Baan Angthong" in Ayutthaya era when people moved to low area for better agriculture location.
Angthong, originally known as "Wiset Chai Chan city", is located on the "Noi River" and the low-lying land of Chao Praya River. It was an essential frontier outpost of Ayutthaya when fighting with the Burmese. As appeared in several parts of Ayutthaya chronicles, especially, prior to the defeat of Ayutthaya in 1767, the Burmese encamped at "Wiset Chai Chan city" to attack Ayutthaya causing "Bang Rachan Battle", a noted event recorded in Thai history.
Later during the Thonburi era, "Wiset Chai Chan city" was moved to a new site on the left bank of the Chao Phraya River at Ban Bangkaeo and was named "Angthong" since its location was a fertile basin similar to a water and rice bowl of the country.
